Bulgaria is a democratic country born out of the communist era. As time goes by, more and more of the communist blocks are being replaced with modern buildings and the vast majority of large European and American conglomerates and Banks etc are now opening offices. Bulgaria joined the EU in January 2007 and has benefited and is still benefiting from a massive injection of EU funds, which have improved infrastructure etc enormously and invited funds from a wide variety of worldwide companies, eager to gain a piece of a rapidly expanding emerging country.

When David first visited Bansko in June 2006, it took 2 hours to travel from the old airport terminal at Sofia airport to the bottom of the mountains and a further hour to get into the town of Bansko. Not the case now!

Sofia has a brand new terminal, which is clean, airy, roomy and ready for the planned tourist expansion. The road to Bansko is now primarily a wide dual carriageway and the mountain road has been widened and strengthened with overtaking areas and car parks with rest rooms etc.

Bansko is just 30 miles north of Greece so has long warm summers. Bansko’s snow record is also excellent, but due to it’s location it also has more clear sunny days in the winter than most established European winter resorts.
